Unit sizes for bigger documents? Empty Unit sizes for bigger documents?

Post  FJGC Tue 06 Sep 2016, 1:34 pm

Hello,
So it seems unit sizes do affect performance, by a lot. I tried changing the default 12x12 unit square document size to a 20x20 unit, and basically, i could draw without problems for about 10 minutes, and then I would have massive performance issues (the app stalling the entire computer for periods of 10 or so seconds), and would only become workable after returning the "size" to 12x12 units. Does anybody have any idea on how to improve performance with larger unit sizes? Is Expresii 64 bit? Do I need more video memory? I already have a 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M.

Another random question: how many pixels does a 1 unit represent? 100x100 pixels? It seems that when you export this really doesn't matter, but I want to find an ideal unit size to export resolution ratio, becuase I would love to make large prints of the work without it looking too pixelated up close.

Thanks for the help everybody!

Currently we limit the output size to be 12k x 12k and that the limit even if you have a large 20 x 20 units paper.

You can treat one unit as 256 pixels, so 20 units = 5k pixels.

Stalling in your case is probably due to undo buffer being filled up and the system need to do some memory swapping. You can try manually reducing the undo level and see if it helps (truth be told, the fastest card I have is only is 750Ti so I never experienced painting with one of those monster gaming GPU's).

Expresii is 32-bit, but the stalling should be due to what is happening in the GPU memory.

For your case, I'd recommend increasing paper size only when the thinnest line you need can't be resolved, because even a 12x12 unit (or even smaller) paper can output to 12k x 12k pixels and there won't be any pixelation in that 12k x 12k output.
