Can we make our own paper?
I enjoy making custom substrates for my artwork. Is there a way I can create my own custom paper in Expresii?
Re: Can we make our own paper?
There is. You first need to switch to 'Advanced' user mode (in the App Menu>System>Advanced>User Mode)
Then, in the Paper Material tab, you will find the control for custom paper texture.
However, note that you need to use a texture with good high-res (at least 512x512) and that showing nice fibers otherwise Expresii's rendering may not be as appealing as those default ones.

Admin~ I don't know if you check replies inside of threads, but I will try speaking to you from here first before posting a new topic. Would it be possible for you to present an example of a paper texture that has the qualities of one of the really detailed rough papers? I just need to visualize the relationship between light and dark values in the image to help me understand what works best within Expresii.
Thank you
Thank you

Yes, here's one public domain texture in 512x512:

We almost decided to include this texture in our default set because it looks nice in Expresii (although resolution is a little low for us), but then I thought maybe I should leave it for a tutorial showing how to use custom paper texture so we finally didn't include it. LOL
FYI, all our default papers are in either 1024 or 2048, either scanned by us or bought as stock images. Usually, auto-leveling the image is good enough, but we do use a little value bias if needed.

Re: Can we make our own paper?
Note that only JPG is supported for the texture file. We'll fix that file filter in the next update.
Re: Can we make our own paper?
Thanks, I did try a PNG first and when that did not work, I switched to jpeg and it worked. Do you take advantage of 16-bit or is 8-bit the limit?
Re: Can we make our own paper?
No for 16-bit. I believe an 8-bit texture is good enough, but when you *prepare* the texture, 16-bit probably better as you may be stretching the pixels.
Practically, 16-bit data takes double the space, but the improvement may be less than a few percent. It also takes a bit more processing time that could be spent elsewhere.

Re: Can we make our own paper?
That makes sense. Cool. So I did go ahead and make a few and I am becoming more pleased with my efforts as I practice. Here is a shot of a piece of paper from inside Expresii. I scanned a sheet of paper I found in the fabrication department where I work, and did my 'preparation' thing to it.
I have to say, I think I can get even better results with time, but I LOVE the way your liquid ink simulation makes use of it. I want to try some more textures. This is fun. :-)

Re: Can we make our own paper?
Thanks. Here is the a link to the grain jpeg. I have also attempted to attach the file to this post. We'll see if it sticks. :-) Please feel free to use it in any way you wish. I have some thoughts about some others I would like to try. I hope you enjoy it!
Re: Can we make our own paper?
Thanks for sharing David! Let me put your paper texture to our third-party resources page for ppl to download.
I did an auto-level on your texture in Paint.NET to make the value distribution a bit more balanced. The following is a resultant rendering:

Nice one! That is fun to see, thanks! Could you share the modified version so I can compare and improve my technique? Thanks for the conversation. :-)
Re: Can we make our own paper?
Thanks! I just downloaded Paint.NET I have been unfamiliar with it until now, so thanks for that as well.
I do have another question if I may. Can you share some insights into the settings: alum scale, and toe scale? I have tried to get a reaction out of them but I'm not perceiving the changes as I move the sliders.
