Some users reported they are not able to get their license key obtained from Gumroad verified and thus are unable to use Expresii.  At first, I thought it has to do with things like firewall or anti-virus on user's end, but I realized there's one thing in common - they are all on Windows 7. I just dig up an old Win7 machine of mine to test, and found that indeed, the check also failed for me! So, it seems it's related to some kind of Windows 7 & Gumroad incompatibility.

I've contacted Gumroad and see if they have any idea. For the time being, any one wanting to use Expresii but is on Win7, please consider upgrading to Win 10.  If you need to stay on Win7, please contact us and we will give you special treatment for the licensing. I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Some update: we saw an error message that basically says “Security error occurred” when using the HTTPS protocol to access Gumroad's API on Win7. The same call is successful on Win10. Tried both Win7 version before and after their Service Pack 1.

Since Win7 is officially no longer under maintenance by Microsoft, maybe this is related to Win7 now lacking some kind of certificate needed by HTTPS? scratch

We found out what went wrong. Win7 users can fix this by installing this Windows Update:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/update-to-enable-tls-1-1-and-tls-1-2-as-default-secure-protocols-in-winhttp-in-windows-c4bd73d2-31d7-761e-0178-11268bb10392

Nowadays many websites require TLS to work. In Win7, Window's WinHTTP component doesn't use TLS by default. The above update fixes that by including TLS by default.

If you can't get this Windows Update, you have to wait for the next update of Expresii, in which we would add the TLS flag on our side to fix the issue.

FYI, 64-bit Expresii desktop version 2021.02.22 is uploaded. I verified with a machine on Win7 that the fix works. Please update to this Expresii version if you experience license check issue on Win7.
